When you think about summer, you may think of vibrant florals. As we transition into fall, those colors begin to dull and slowly disappear. As a way to preserve the vibrant summer colors, I made a salt dough wall hanging for our living room. I love how it turned out. Here is how to make your own salt dough wall hanging. You can make this for yourself or create a nice homemade gift for a friend.
Gather Flowers and Greens
Walk your yard and select an assortment of flowers and greenery. Select smaller flowers and leaves. Try to make sure it’s no longer than 2.5″ long, or it may not fit on the salt dough ornament.
Once you’ve made your selection, lay out your flowers, leaves, etc. onto a dry paper towel to dry or remove any critters that may have snuck inside with you. Tip: Gather extra florals and greens in case some do not bake well.
Prepare Salt Dough
Below is the recipe I used to create my circular dough wall hanging ornaments. Tip: Make more ornaments than you think you need. Some may not bake as well as others. It’ll help to have extra on hand. Below is just the recipe for salt dough ornaments. Be sure to puncture the hole before baking. Also, do not puncture too close to the top or it may break apart. For this project, you will press your flowers into the salt dough before baking. You may also do it after, but will need to Mod Podge the flowers onto the completely cooled ornaments.
Secure Ornaments to Dowel or Stick
What you want to use as your wall hanger depends on what look you’re going for. I opted for a stick instead of a dowel to preserve the natural look. You may use yarn or twine to string up your ornaments. I used twine and a chenille/tapestry needle to thread the twine through the hole of my ornament. I staggered my rows between 2 and 3 ornaments for a total of 5 rows. For each row, I used a single piece of twine and simply knotted it behind each ornament to secure it in place. I then tied it to the top of my stick and eyeballed the distance between each row. You may also want to occasionally hold up your wall hanging to see how the rows are falling into place.
When you’re finished, secure your wall hanging and enjoy!
